WMU Capstone Project - 2023

Video Games that Don't Exist

In this project, I used AI to generate random images using vague genre prompts. I then thought up video game concepts by picturing those images as video game cover art. The next step was editing those images until they looked presentable. Some took much more editing than others.

I then used the game art and concepts to produce "title screen music" based on the final images. The goal was to test myself in my ability to match any image or idea given to me with music!

Below you'll find each game's title, a youtube link to each song, and how it would theoretically play if it existed.

SCENIC

In “Scenic” the player will begin their quest to make it to the capital city, Katoa!

Katoa is the center of trade in the world of Scenic, and you want to be as rich as you can before reaching the city borders. Discover a lost temple, solve puzzles to venture ever deeper inside, plunder it of its treasure, and escape before it all collapses!

Each level in Scenic will be a procedurally generated temple with varying environments. The player will have only 1 chance to get the treasure from each temple, and arrive at Katoa with as much wealth as possible! Only by starting a new game can you attempt previous dungeons.

RANCID

"Rancid" is a DOOM-like shooter where the player will collect bigger weapons to kill bigger zombies.

In the world of Rancid, a plant-like virus has begun spreading over the earth, raising the dead from their graves. If you are bitten or killed by one, you join their ranks!

Make your way out of the city protecting as many people as you can find! When you reach the end of the road, the people you save may be the ones saving you!

CLIMB


“Climb” takes place in a mega-zoo built in the year 2155. It is a massive jungle built within a city. It was built so the animals can never see their observers. In the game, you play as a large ape or gorilla living in this lush walled jungle.

Through a newly opened maintenance hatch in the wall, you see a bright light. A desire to chase it emerges within you, and you must climb up to the hatch to escape. The game will be a difficult 2D platformer, traveling upward. There will be mini-bosses as the zoo security, and larger animals stand in your path.

​The game will explore themes of living in a cage, freedom, and not giving up even though the mountain ahead of you seems unclimbable.

THE BRIAR

In “The Briar” You play as a monster hunter called Nicodemus Silver, who has been hired to clear out a castle of its foul demons. However, as you make your way inside, and the doors close behind you, you’ll discover a lot more than you bargained for. In this Castlevania-style monster beat-em-up, you will clear wave after wave of foul beasts as you collect better gear, find secret passages, and get ever closer to defeating the demon lord hiding within the highest tower of the castle.

​The game will explore themes of human life, immortality, and the ability to live forever if one so chooses.

DOWNBEAT

In “Downbeat”, players will choose which fighter they want to play, and will get to choose from a diverse cast of characters. In the world of “Downbeat”, warriors from across various dimensions are brought together to find out who is the strongest!

​Play as your favorite fighters, Hoverboard-Lava-Robot, “Electric Arm” Johnson, and Bug Person!

RAD-HATTER

“Rad-Hatter” is a game with very deep lore, where you play as a cool monkey guy who jumps around on balloons. Your goal is to collect the 12 Caps of Chaos. In the 3D platformer “Rad-Hatter”, the player will obtain different abilities by finding magical hats! The powers found will let you solve various platforming puzzles across the map. Find the balloon with the gem inside to unlock the Cap of Chaos and move on to the next level!

​The themes explored are having a really great time!

DRIFTWOOD

Driftwood is a resource-gathering survival game, where players will build up their ships, travel from island to island and fight off pirates, or even become pirates themselves.

​The player has the choice of how they wish to make their fortune in this game. They may either trade, collect resources, and kill monsters of the deep to acquire wealth, or they may choose to plunder other ships and become a scourge of the ocean. The path ahead depends on the choices you make. Are you seaworthy?

TO DUST

“To Dust” is a Metroidvania-style game where the player will unlock abilities that will allow them to progress further. Long ago, a raging dust storm swept across the land, turning everyone to stone. After an unknown amount of time, the player breaks out of their stone shell and embarks on a journey to find the source of this crisis.

Along the way, the player will encounter many others who have broken out, but have instead decided to take advantage of being among the only ones left and live as warlords, scavengers, and raiders across the once quiet landscape.

The themes explored are desolation, life in the post-apocalypse, having no power in a world where the strongest rule, and the ways people use the power they acquire. All culminating in the solving of a grand mystery as you uncover the truth of the dust storm’s origins, "To Dust" is coming soon to an alternate dimension near you!
